Stay Safe in the Summer First Aid for Heat Stroke

A heat wave is a condition of unusually hot weather, where the temperature hits more than 40 degrees C. This can lead to major health risks. The peak months of heat waves in India are from April to July. It is important to adopt preventive measures like proper hydration, and light clothing and limit outdoor exposure during peak sunlight between 11 am to 4 pm.

First Aid for Heat Stroke:

  • Move to a cooler place: Seek a shaded spot with good air circulation or an air-conditioned indoor area.
  • Drink plenty of fluids, preferably water or an electrolyte-rich drink such as fresh fruit juice.
  • Remove any tight clothing, such as socks in order to allow heat to escape through the skin.
  • Cooling Measures: Wet a cloth or towel with cold water and place it on the forehead, neck or wrists. You can also apply ice packs on the armpits, groin and back. Take a cold bath. Do not use ice packs directly on the skin
  • Elevate legs: If feeling dizzy or lightheaded, sit down and elevate legs slightly. This can help improve blood circulation to the brain and reduce symptoms.

In most cases, the symptoms will subside in two to three days. Seek medical help if symptoms worsen. Hence, any delay in getting proper treatment could damage the brain and other vital organs. Acute heat stroke could be fatal,

DO’s:

  • Drink sufficient water, even if not thirsty
  • Wear lightweight, light-coloured, loose clothes
  • Use protective sunglasses, an umbrella or a hat, shoes or chappals
  • Use fans, or AC, and take baths in cold water frequently

Don’ts:

  • Avoid going out in the sun, especially between noon and 3 pm
  • Avoid alcohol, coffee and carbonated soft drinks, which dehydrate the body
  • Do not eat stale food
  • Avoid strenuous activities when the outside temperature is high
  • Do not leave children in parked vehicles

Summer Drinks that can help Prevent Heat Stroke:

To prevent heat stroke during the summer, stay hydrated with refreshing drinks like coconut water, which is rich in electrolytes, or a homemade electrolyte drink made from water, a pinch of salt, and a squeeze of lemon. Fresh fruit juices, such as watermelon or cucumber juice, are also excellent for hydration and replenishing essential nutrients. Rooh Afza syrup mixed with water or milk, and Jal Jeera, a tangy are both traditional options that help keep you cool.
